1. This article on the “5 Shocking Realities of Being Transgender the Media Ignores”
This funny and well thought out piece came to me via Patton Oswalt on Facebook. It’s not posted on a site that I consider a paramount of journalism, but I do feel the article really nailed what it needed to say, and Cracked was a good forum for the tone. I would like to offer the caveat that being transgender is no longer classified as a mental disorder, as of the publishing of the DSM-5 in 2013 (but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still get treated like one). I also recommend following up the article by watching the Katie Couric interview referenced in the article. Sing it, sister.
While we’re talking equality, why not check out Neil DeGrasse Tyson being awesome, yet again. This time he’s answering the question “What’s up with chicks in science?” which is then translated to “are there genetic differences between men and women that explain why there are more men in science.” NDgT, as always, answered thoughtfully and exposed the greater issue. Fuck yeah, NDgT!
